In some cases, this device has broken leaving fragments inside women’s bodies. The plastic arms of the device appear to become brittle, causing them to break off inside a woman’s uterus.

The breakage of the device arms can cause internal injury. On some occasions the arms become imbedded in the uterine wall, causing chronic pain, vaginal bleeding, pelvic inflammatory disease, infection, and infertility.

Removing the fragments can be extremely difficult and may require a hysteroscopy, laparotomy, similar to a caesarian section, or a hysterectomy which may be necessary after a uterine rupture.
